New Brazilian Acquisitions at the ARChive

With the exchange rate nearly as exhilarating as the music, I did some serious vinyl huntin' and book buyin' in Rio. There are modern CD and bookstores everywhere in Brazil, but the stock tends to be regional. CDs are currently about the same price as in the States, as the currency realignment reduced the normal price by half. LPs were an incredible deal, averaging about 10 RL. ($6.60) for things that are extremely difficult to find in America, about three buck for most everything else. I tried to buy used LPs in Salvador, but the street vendors seemed to have washed them in sea water, or something that left visible scub marks on the surface.

Here's the list of the new additions to the ARChive's world music collection of over 30,000 discs:

Ataúlfo Alves. E Muito Samba (Polydor, Brasil, LPNG 44.024, LP, 1968). Cover only, came with his disc "Eternamente Samba" (Polydor, Brasil, LPNG 44.002, LP, 1966) inside. I’m a professional, so don’t do this at home: Remember, ALWAYS check to make sure the actual discs you bought is in the sleeve you bought!

Brazil's latest genie hit the city all at once, appearing one morning posted at the front of every news stand in the city: Tiazinha - a whip toting, S&M masked, bikini clad Children’s TV host. Here she presents pap-pop hits complete with a supersized teen mag.

Towards the end of my trip I discovered a cache of 10" — 33 rpm discs that are part of the Nova História da Musica Popular Brasileira series, and the older, História da Musica Popular Brasileira. Each of these discs is tucked in a back pocket of a 12" square paper booklet containing a historical text, lyrics and profusely illustrated. In the Nova series:

Ary Barroso (Abril Cultural, HMPB-14, 1977).

Cartola (Abril Cultural, HMPB-18, 1977).
Dorival Caymmi (Abril Cultural, HMPB-02, 1976).
Gilberto Gil (Abril Cultural, HMPB-13, 1977).
Luiz Gonzaga / Humberto Teixeira (Abril Cultural, HMPB-11, 1977).

In the original series: Ary Barroso. (Abril Cultural, MPB-5, 1970).
Luiz Gonzaga / Humberto Teixeira. (Abril Cultural, MPB-13, 1970).
Odds & Ends:

Brazils proximity to Argentina and delight in American pop and rock means that there are plenty of Tango records and Portuguese versions of American nonsense. I passed on the Led Zep stacks, but did pick up some delightful odds and ends:

Martin Denny. A Taste of Honey (RCA Victor, Brazil, FLP-35016, LP, n.d.). American exotica. Rear cover notes in Portuguese.

Eartha Kitt. Down to Eartha (RCA Victor, Brazil, BLK 23, LP, n.d.) Growwwlllll, with notes in Portuguese.

Pelé. O Mundo de Pelé (Ducal, Brazil, MIS 018, LP, 1969). Spoken word LP put together by the Museu de Imagem e do som with a soccer ball full size on the cover.

Astor Piazolla. Tango en Hi-Fi (Music Hall, Brazil, MHLP 40481, LP, 1974).

Astor Piazzolla . Maria De Buenos Aires (Elenco / Phonogram, Brazil, SE 1008/9, 1972). . Tango opera with lyrics by Horacio Ferrer in gatefold sleeve with notes, synopsis.

Astor Piazzolla y su orquesta. Pulsacion (Trova, Argentina, TL 38, LP, n.d.). mono

Yma Sumac. Voice of the Xtabay (Capitol, US, H244, 10" LP, n.d.). A US release, but different from our other copies in that there is no info written on the spine.

I also picked up a few books:

Bossa Nova - History, Sound & Image (Spala Editora, Brasil, 85-7048-046-6, paperback, 1996). In Portuguese & English. Book and CD in a boxed set.

Fazendo Carnaval (The Making of Carnival) (Lacerda Editores, Rio, Brasil, 85-210-0050-2, hardcover, 1997). Text in English and Portuguese with color photos by Oséas Jarmouch. A real beauty.

Luis Gonzaga (Martin Claret, São Paulo, Brazil, 85-7232-001-6, paper, 160 pages, 1990). #2 in the Vozes do Brasil series, includes a little color poster.

MPB (A História de um Século) (Funarte / Atração, São Paulo, Brasil, 85-85781-38-6, hardcover, 451 pages, 1997). Text in English, Spanish and Portuguese, profusely illustrated with photos.

É Hoje! (Today's the Day) (Irmãos Vitale, Brasil, -, hardcover, 1978). In Portuguese. Wonderful caricature /drawings by Lan, text by Haroldo Costa. In illustrated slipcase. A sort of accompaniment to the 3 disc, "Liana - O Samba No Brasil"
