The ARChive of Contemporary Music (ARC) is pleased to announce our latest initiative and focus for 2021, From Her To Eternity.
Our mission is to create a physical collection of recordings and related music materials and to organize events and activities that focus on & celebrate the contributions of women to Popular music.
We’re lucky to have the project spearheaded by two remarkable women, Courtney Love and Julie Panebianco.
The photo above accompanies our first Instagram post featuring Anita Lane with Nick Cave. “She thought the best ideas were the ones that never saw the light of day.” @nickcaveofficial wrote. Anita Lane, singer, songwriter & co founder of The Bad Seeds “despised the concept of a muse but was everybody’s. She was the smartest and most talented of all of us, by far”. Lane wrote dark music that surprised by it’s lush melodies. Her lyrics, working with the Birthday Party & the Bad Seeds were eerie & morbid but were unerringly beautiful. Cave still performs songs Lane co-authored, especially “From Her to Eternity.”
The Archive of Contemporary Music and Board Member @courtneylove are dedicating FromHerToEternity a project honoring & celebrating the contributions of women to music, to Anita Lane, who died in late April at the age of 61.
We are asking women working in music to lend their names in support of the Project. Along with performers, we urge input from all facets of the music industry, including authors, producers, engineers, managers, publicists, support staff, designers, photographers, and industry executives. Can’t wait to hear from women roadies!
We’ll be featuring women who have joined the project every few days on Instagram #archiveofcontemporarymusic and there will be a separate gallery of all supporters set up soon. Various Women’s organizations have also offered their blessings, including, Audiofemme, Les Filles, She Is The Music and Women In Music.
Some of the performers who’s joined so far include, Melissa Auf De Meyer, Nettie Baker, Lori Barbiero, Maggie Bell, Cindy Lee Berryhill, Dee Dee Bridgewater, Charlotte Caffey, Brandi Carlile, Rosanne Cash, Courtney Love, Sussan Deyhim, Deva Premal, Anna Domino, Jennifer Finch, Anna Gabriel, Valerie June, Amanda Kramer, Alexis Kraus, Yungchen Lhamo, Angela McCluskey, Leona Naess, Karen O, Kate Pierson, Linda Pittman, Cat Power, Robyn, and Linda Ronstadt.
Since 1985 ARC has cataloged recordings in our collection created by women – now numbering 40,000+ recordings in all formats and genres. With your help we can grow this focused collection to create the premier reference source for study and enjoyment.
Here’s a pile of relevant links to stir the imagination and reference all the women who we want to honor & remember. #anitalane #fromhertoeternity #ARCny #courtneylove #juliewhitebread #nickcave. Thanks to Nick Cave for use of photo and support.
