Happy Birthday Quincy Jones

One of my favorite albums by QJ is Big Band Bossa Nova (Mercury, USA, MG 20751, 12″, 33, LP, n.d.). featuring the great “Soul Bossa Nova”.   Still it’s the productions and arrangements that floor me.   And the best? What I adored, I played, and still play, and have yet to donate to the ARC, is “State of Independence,” the 12” 45rpm single version running 11+ minutes.

I first heard the song on the eponymous Donna Summer (Donna Summer  (Geffen; USA, GHS 2005, 12″, vinyl disc-LP, 1982). It forced me find the extended version. I was a failed club DJ that insisted on playing this regardless of the crowd, mood or era.  The mix is intoxicating, the choir soars, it can segue into anything.  While there’s a debt to be paid to the original version by Jon Anderson and Vangelis, Quincy’s production rules.

I’ve read that that choir included Lionel Richie, Dionne Warwick, Diana Ross, Michael Jackson, Brenda Russell, Christopher Cross, Dyan Cannon, James Ingram, Kenny Loggins and Stevie Wonder.  I know that one of the drummers was Brazilian Paulinho Da Costa, who Mr. Jones also used on Thriller.  Speaking of which, I loved slipping in “Soul Makossa” on Michael Jackson’s “Wanna Be Startin’ Somethin.'”  But that’s me.

So best wishes and a very Happy Birthday Mr. Jones.

Our minor tribute here, a list of a few hundred of your releases we’ve preserved and cataloged so far at ARC.
