Things We Said Today

It is a frustrating day here at the ARC as we seek out the last of over 800 discs to scan for the new Grammy Hall of Fame that will open in LA in Dec. We’re missing about 100, and they all seem pretty common, until you actually need them – stuff like GOD BLESS THE CHILD by Billie Holiday and John Lee Hooker’s BOOGIE CHILLUN. More and more we realize how important it is to have everything ever made in one place. Our modest goal. But a day’s work and I only 8 found we needed.

Churning the web for 78s I discovered a curious site called The Beatles at 78 rpm. And it turns out they have an image of an early Quarryman acetate, “That’ll Be The Day” and an Asian Indian 78, “Things We Said Today.”

Coincidently, on this day, 40 years ago today, Apple Records was launched, Not coincidently, on this day, pre-lawsuits and a bit earlier, the founder of the original Apple, Steve Wozniak was born. As was Nitty Gritty Dirt Band guitarist Jeff Hanna, and Eric Carmen, Joe Jackson, Michael James Kale of Guess Who, Richie (Beau) Ramone, and Charlie Sexton. So not such a bad day after all, just 92 more records to find – tomorrow…
