gallery: Small Heads

We’ve been digitizing tens-of-thousands of 78s with our partners at the Internet Archive and started to notice a few early vanity labels showing up, in the days before picture sleeves. One approach to letting you know exactly who you’re listening to was to picture the floating head of the performer. More recently we’ve been cataloging our 45s, and there are also quite a few newer format floaters.  But heads are heads, so here’s a veritable guillotine gallery of our favorite faces.  Bonus treat: Head straight to the bottom for a peek at the MOST small heads by any one artist!

And now…  The undisputed king of the the small visage, the Godfather of floating domes, the man of a thousand encores, offering us 14 headshots on 45s, more than anyone in history, but never enough – Mr. James Brown!
